US President-elect Joe Biden nominated former Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen as the next Secretary of the Treasury, a historic decision that will make her the first woman to lead the department.

Biden announced Yellen as his Treasury pick in a press release that also tapped a number of others for posts on his economic team, including Cecilia Rouse as chair of the Council of Economic Advisers. The Biden transition team said his picks for senior economic roles would help “lift America out of the current economic downturn and build back better.”

Yellen was also the first woman to chair the Federal Reserve after serving for a decade, first as San Francisco Fed president and as vice chair of the Board of Governors of the Fed after that. Yellen’s leadership of the Fed from 2014 to 2018 was marked by an improving labor market and historically low interest rates.
