Biden’s executive order directs the federal government to conduct a 100-day review of supply chains in four sets of products: semiconductors, large-capacity batteries for electric vehicles, rare earth materials, and pharmaceuticals.

Biden acknowledged that the executive order would not offer a quick fix for the near-term chip shortage. The problem is urgent, forcing some US carmakers to idle plants. The supply disruptions threaten to harm US economic growth just as Biden tries to rebuild an economy badly battered by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Biden’s executive order follows calls from bipartisan members of Congress and industry leaders who expressed worries about the potential consequences of the shortage. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said that “semiconductor manufacturing is a dangerous weak spot in our economy and in our national security.”
