US President-elect Joe Biden will not immediately remove the Trump administration’s tariffs on Chinese exports, as he moves to map out a strategy with US allies on how to best deal with Beijing, according to The New York Times.

Biden plans to conduct a full review of the existing phase one trade deal and consult with traditional allies in Asia and Europe to develop a coherent strategy before making a move on the tariffs.

“The best China strategy, I think, is one which gets every one of our — or at least what used to be our — allies on the same page,” Biden said in an interview with The New York Times. “It’s going to be a major priority for me in the opening weeks of my presidency to try to get us back on the same page with our allies.”

The phase one trade deal was hammered out after an 18-month trade war. As part of the trade deal signed in January, China agreed to purchase an additional $200 billion in US goods through 2021, but it has not kept pace with the target.
