Biden Reappoints Powell to Lead the Fed
US President Joe Biden has nominated Jerome Powell for a second term as Fed chair, opting for continuity with the central bank’s policies as the specter of rising inflation looms in an election year.

The decision potentially gives Powell a reward for helping rescue the US economy from the pandemic. It is in step with a long tradition that the president tends to stick with the Fed chair he inherited from his predecessor.

Biden has also appointed current Fed governor Lael Brainard to serve as vice chair. She had been seen as a top contender to replace Powell.
appoint(v.)
“As I’ve said before, we can’t just return to where we were before the pandemic, we need to build our economy back better, and I’m confident that Chair Powell and Dr. Brainard’s focus on keeping inflation low, prices stable, and delivering full employment will make our economy stronger than ever before,” Biden said in a statement.
The nominations require Senate approval.
In making the decision, Biden praised Powell for his “steady and decisive leadership” amid the COVID-19 pandemic and economic recovery efforts.

As chairman, Powell has steered the central bank’s aggressive response to the fallout from the coronavirus. As the economy plunged into recession, the Fed slashed interest rates to near zero in March 2020 and announced a giant bond-buying campaign.

That policy was adopted after much of the past decade in which inflation fell short of the Fed’s 2% target, but now it is being tested as soaring prices have pushed inflation to a 31-year high.
Powell said for most of this year that the inflation pressures would prove “transitory,” a view that has led to criticism that the Fed is behind the curve in tightening policy.
