The Bank of Japan (BOJ) decided to expand monetary stimulus measures and pledged to buy government bonds in unlimited amounts, as it steps up its response to the coronavirus pandemic.
日本央行決定擴大貨幣刺激措施,並承諾無限量購買政府債券,以加強因應新冠肺炎疫情。

The BOJ said in a statement it removed its annual ceiling of 80 trillion yen ($745 billion) on its government bond purchases in a bid to provide ample liquidity and ensure stability in financial markets.

“The BOJ will purchase the necessary amount of government bonds without setting an upper limit” to keep its benchmark interest rate around its 0% target, Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Kuroda told reporters following its policy meeting.
日本央行總裁黑田東彥在政策會議結束後對記者表示,「日本央行不設上限,將購買必要數量的政府債券」,把基準利率維持在0%目標附近。
The central bank also said additional easing measures could be taken, as needed, to make financial markets stable and achieve its 2 percent inflation target.
央行還表示,必要時,可能會另外採取寬鬆措施,以穩定金融市場,達到2%的通膨目標。

The BOJ joined the U.S. Federal Reserve in expanding its purchases of government bonds to an unlimited amount, as the public health crisis triggered concerns about a deep global recession. Japan’s government previously approved an emergency economic stimulus package worth 117.1 trillion yen.

“In this crisis situation, it is important to take action along with the government, as seen in Europe and the United States. We expect a synergy effect between our monetary measures and the government’s fiscal emergency package,” said Kuroda.

To ease corporate funding strains, the BOJ more than doubled the size of corporate bond and commercial paper purchases to 20 trillion yen. With many companies seeing a drastic decline in revenue, the central bank is concerned that a sequence of bankruptcies could happen if borrowers don’t have access to funds.
