“Bad Recession” Ahead, Says Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase
JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon predicted the U.S. will soon enter a “bad recession,” adding that banks will likely see financial pressure similar to that of the 2008 financial crisis.

“At a minimum, we assume that it will include a bad recession combined with some kind of financial stress similar to the global financial crisis of 2008,” Dimon said in his annual letter to shareholders. “Our bank cannot be immune to the effects of this kind of stress.”

Dimon said his bank was preparing for economic growth to plunge as much as 35% in the coming weeks and months. The nation’s unemployment rate could reach 14%, the highest rate since the Great Depression, and may not even peak until the end of this year.

Dimon made the dire predictions as part of his annual letter to shareholders. It remains unclear “how fast or slow the recovery will be,” or how his bank would fare in the crisis, he said.
嚴重的;危急的;極端的fare(v.)
Dimon was more pessimistic about prospects for the economy than some industry figures. When stock markets were sliding last month, former Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein said in a tweet to “expect quick recovery when health threat recedes.” He said the economy “will avoid systemic damage” that takes years to work through.

While JPMorgan is fresh off a record year for revenue and profit, Dimon said that the bank’s earnings “will be down meaningfully in 2020” because of the coronavirus. He also warned that in an “extremely adverse” downturn in the U.S. economy, the lender would probably consider suspending its dividend to preserve capital.

That message is likely to reverberate among bank investors and analysts. With the leader of America’s largest bank by assets broaching the topic of a dividend cut, it would seem that most banks could also be vulnerable if the economy doesn’t recover later this year.
