Jeff and Renee are talking about their recent visit to a farm.
Jeff: What was your favorite animal at the farm yesterday?
Renee: I like the sheep the most! They were really cute.
Jeff: Well, it’s too bad that we don’t live in Australia. Some farmers there are giving away sheep for free!
pity(n.)可惜
Renee: What? You’re kidding, right? Why would they do that?
kid(v.)開玩笑play a joke on sb.開~的玩笑=play a trick on sb.
Jeff: It has to do with the weather, the large number of sheep and the low price of mutton. With drier weather this year, there is less grass growing. This is making it harder for farmers to feed the nearly 79 million sheep in the country.
have…to do with和~有關連have nothing to do with跟~無關mutton(n.)羊肉feed(v.)餵養
Renee: Wow! That’s a lot. And the low price of meat isn’t good for farmers either, right?
either A or B不是A就是B
Jeff: Exactly. The farmers can’t make money, so they are trying to find people to take their sheep.
Renee: Well, if we lived in Australia, I would want at least a dozen sheep as pets.
dozen(n.) 一打
Jeff: A dozen! It’s good we don’t live there. We would need to buy a farm to keep them!
