Last week, Harper Nielson, an elementary school student from Brisbane, Australia, was given detention for refusing to stand while the National Anthem was being played in a school assembly.

Harper, 9, refused to stand for “Advance Australia Fair” when it was played during assembly at Kenmore South State School, out of respect for the country’s indigenous peoples, who she feels are not represented in the song.

When the third-grade student was asked if she would like to leave the school hall while the anthem was being played, she refused to do so.

But the 9-year-old has also been the target of harsh criticism from many of Australia’s right-wing politicians.

However, Harper seems undeterred from standing up for what she believes in, saying that she is excited that her protest has made an impact on her community.
