Ark Investment Management has trimmed its investment in China on concerns that the nation’s tech stocks will plunge amid the Beijing government’s recent crackdown.

China’s weighting in Ark’s flagship fund, Ark Innovation ETF, has plummeted to less than 1% from a high of 8% in February, and the Ark Next Generation Internet ETF has fallen to 5.4%, the lowest since 2014, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

In a webinar with investors, Ark CEO Cathie Wood discussed a “valuation reset” in the Chinese tech sector. “From a valuation point of view, these stocks have come down and again from a valuation point of view, probably will remain down,” she said.

Just days after its IPO in the US, the ride-hailing company Didi was removed from Chinese app stores over national data security concerns. TikTok parent company ByteDance shelved IPO plans due to data security risks. China has also cracked down on Alibaba, Ant Group, and Tencent in recent months.

Ark’s shrinking exposure to China reflects both reduced stakes in bellwethers such as Tencent as well as declining valuations. Chinese tech stocks have wiped out more than $500 billion in market value since their peaks in February.

The active ETF provider keeps intact the outlook on larger Chinese tech stocks that it owns, Ark’s Asia innovation analyst Yulong Cui said on the webinar. “This is largely because the regulatory changes have not, for the most part, impacted the businesses from a fundamental point of view with regards to cybersecurity clients or US listing reviews,” he said.
