He noted that amniocentesis, a procedure aiming to screen fetuses for abnormalities, is normally performed on women who are 16 to 20 weeks into pregnancy. At that stage, the abortion of unhealthy fetuses would be illegal under the Christian group’s proposal, and there would be infants born with anomalies that their parents would have to attend to for the rest of their lives.

In May, the governor of the state of Missouri triggered a similar controversy by signing an anti-abortion bill that would penalize anyone who performs abortions on patients more than eight weeks pregnant. The ban was later overturned by a federal judge in August.
