Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy eighth grader Kayla Tenney Villalobos claimed victory at the 2023 North Idaho Spelling Bee after she correctly spelled “Taiwan” in the championship round.

In Round 16, Villalobos was neck and neck with her competitor Erik Brunner, a sixth grader from Lakes Middle School who finished second.

In Round 18, Brunner misspelled his word, while Villalobos correctly spelled her word to move on to the next round.

Along with being given a $1,000 check and a trophy for winning, Villalobos also received a trip to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

At this event which runs from May 31 to June 2 in Washington, D.C, she will have a chance to win the champion’s prize of $50,000 cash.
