A recent study published in Science Advances points out that birds in the Amazon rainforest have gotten smaller over the last four decades, and scientists believe that rising temperatures may be the reason.
study (n.)
The research team has analyzed the sizes and weights of 77 different bird species since the early 1980s.
species (n.)物種
They discovered that as time goes on, nearly all the bird species have gotten lighter, with most species becoming about 2% lighter every decade.
For such small creatures, 2% weight loss is significant. Moreover, not only have the birds’ bodies shrunk over time, their wings have gotten longer.
loss (n.)失去;lose (v.)失去over time 隨著時間的推移,漸漸地= with time, graduallyovertime (n.)(adv.)
The researchers believe this to be an adaptation to warmer temperatures since longer wings and smaller bodies allow birds to use less energy to move around and stay cool.
adaptation (n.)
Vitek Jirinec, ecologist and lead researcher of the study, worries that the phenomena may not be limited to the amazon rainforest.
ecologist (n.) 現象be limited to侷限於
Birds all over the planet may experience changing shape due to global warming.
due to因為=because of, owing to
Perhaps it is high time that humans considered the consequences of our actions and if it is worthwhile to sacrifice the environment for economic growth.
