During an official visit, the Chairman of the United States’ unofficial embassy — the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) — told President Tsai Ing-wen that he understands the difficulties that Taiwan is facing because of China.

Speaking to the President, James Moriarty said that it was “counter-productive” that Beijing was trying to persuade the international community to turn their backs on Taiwan.

Moriarty also said that Tsai was a “pragmatic and reasonable leader” when it came to dealing with Beijing.

“We are encouraged every time we see Taiwan try to reach out to the Mainland… I don’t think people in Washington are blaming the lack of dialogue on President Tsai,” he added.

He also said that it was very disappointing that Taiwan was not allowed to take part in this year’s WHA, but was happy to see that more and more countries had started to speak out about how Taiwan is being treated.

Moriarty is visiting to attend the opening of the organization’s new office in Neihu, Taipei, which he called “a building which I think every American and every Taiwanese should be proud of.”
