Airbnb has laid off 1,900 workers, or around a quarter of its global workforce, as its business has been “hit hard” by the coronavirus pandemic. The company’s revenue this year is likely to be less than half of what it earned in 2019.

“We are collectively living through the most harrowing crisis of our lifetime, and as it began to unfold, global travel came to a standstill,” company CEO Brian Chesky told employees in an internal letter. “Airbnb’s business has been hit hard.”

The company had already taken steps to combat the situation, such as raising $2 billion in the last month through debt financing, but the CEO said the company needs to take additional steps because it is still uncertain when global travel will resume.

He added that Airbnb will need to reduce costs and position itself for a travel market that will “look different” after the pandemic.
