A new implanted device has been found to significantly improve mobility in people suffering from Parkinson’s disease, according to a study published in the Canadian Journal of Neurological Sciences last month.

In the past, there was no cure for patients with Parkinson’s disease who had difficulties walking.
But now, Professor Jog and his research team have successfully developed an implanted device that boosts the flow of neural signals between the brain and limbs, allowing the patient to walk normally.

Through the electrical stimulus generated by the implanted device, the feedback mechanisms from the legs to the brain are reawakened, which significantly improves the patients’ mobility.

So far, the effects of this treatment have been found to be long-lasting, even after the implanted device was switched off.

Dr. Beckie Port, a research manager at Parkinson’s UK, says that the treatment has the potential to dramatically elevate the quality of life for Parkinson’s disease patients, helping them regain the freedom to enjoy everyday activities.
