Plunging deep into the sea at around 6,000 to 10,000 meters below sea level, scientists are not searching for any Titanic-like shipwrecks, nor are they looking for oil deposits under the ocean. Rather, they’re bracing themselves for what they’re expecting to find as they turn on their searchlights. Garbage surrounds them in the deep sea, as sea turtles and other deep-sea fish swim through the mounds of white artificial waste, tires and glass jars scattered across the ocean floor.

Big fish eat small fish, and the small fish eat other smaller forms of marine life. Humans, standing at the top of the food chain, eat everything that falls under them.

Unfortunately for us, mankind is both a victim and perpetrator of this whole toxic marine mess. Humans pour hundreds of tons of garbage into rivers, which flow into oceans, creating this toxic underwater landscape. Garbage is currently floating across the five major oceans around the world, which is why garbage from Japan may end up in Alaska.

In 2013, a 19-year-old Dutch teenager named Boyan Slat proposed the idea of using ocean currents to collect garbage.
