The police said that the truck driver came from Northern Ireland and collected the container in Purfleet on the River Thames before leaving shortly after 1:00 a.m. The container had arrived from the port of Zeebrugge in Belgium.

According to Debbie Busler, head of refugee support at the British Red Cross, they were possibly running away from political or religious persecution. For them, taking the risk is a better option than staying in their home countries, she said.
