Meanwhile, a black market has stealthily taken shape — facial data are being sold online and, in one case, 30,000 facial photos were sold at a cost of only RMB 8 (around NT$34), according to Chinese media.

Buyers could potentially use the facial data they acquire to forge identities and commit fraud, such as hacking into smartphone users’ micropayment accounts, as many Chinese Internet users tend to choose facial recognition as their authentication method.

On December 1, the Chinese government introduced a new law that requires all new customers registering mobile phone numbers to have their faces scanned.
