2019: Second Warmest Year on Record
According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the year 2019 was the world’s second warmest year, and the past decade was the hottest on record.

Based on data collected at over 20,000 weather stations around the globe, the analysis by NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) shows that global temperatures in 2019 were the second-highest in history, second only to those recorded in 2016 by a mere 0.07 degrees Fahrenheit.

In addition, the temperatures last year were 1.8 degrees higher than the 1951–1980 mean.

In fact, “the decade that just ended is clearly the warmest decade on record,” said GISS Director Gavin Schmidt.
“Every decade since the 1960s clearly has been warmer than the one before,” he added.
Likewise, NOAA scientists revealed in their research that the 2019 temperatures were 1.7 degrees Fahrenheit above the 20th-century average, and the past five years were the warmest since record-keeping began in 1880.

This observation has gained support from other institutions, such as the Berkeley Earth research group and the Met Office Hadley Centre (UK), whose records show roughly the same peaks and valleys on the plot.

According to the NOAA study, the 2019 mean temperature in the adjacent 48 states of the US was the 34th highest on record, whereas temperatures in the Arctic region rose more than three times faster than elsewhere.
