In recent years there have been countless disputes about the southern branch of the National Palace Museum ranging from whether or not it should be established to which building plan and contractor to use. Now [another conflict has arisen] due to a basic orientation issue. While giving a policy implementation report to the Legislative Yuan's Educational Committee recently, Chou Kung-shin, director of the National Palace Museum stated that the orientation of the southern branch of the National Palace Museum will be a floral cultural museum, which incurred [strong doubts] and criticisms from legislators from all political parties. In order to placate the masses, minister of the Government Information Office Su Jun-bin stepped forth to offer an explanation. He pointed out that the public has misunderstood, as they think the southern branch of the National Palace Museum will only have flowers, like a flower exhibition. In reality, the southern branch of the National Palace Museum will still be exhibiting the collections of the National palace museum in the future, but exhibitions will be focused on artifacts related to flowers. For example, this may include floral themed ceramics, paintings, calligraphy, textiles, and so on. The outdoor section of the southern branch will also have exquisite Taiwanese flowers and plants.
In response to queries of legislators on whether or not the Executive Yuan's policies have changed, Su clarified that the original orientation of the southern branch of the National Palace Museum has not changed, it's just that the museum collection will change from south island artifacts, which they had previously decided on, to artistic works with a floral theme. He stressed that by combining the botanical resources unique to Taiwan and localized characteristics, the southern branch will be able to attract more tourists and link Taiwan to the rest of the world.
